Increasingly appreciated by motorhome manufacturers, in the cab chassisas for developers, in panel version (15.2% of sales in the leisure vehicle sector since 2021), Transit is about to make its revolution. Ford Utility (including PTAC between 3,500 and 4,250 kg) will effectively abandon its thermal blocks (diesel and gasoline depending on the country) in the near future in favor of a fully electric motor, in order to comply with the new global legislation on pollution.
Although mounted in Turkeyat the Otosan factory in Kocaeli, it was in Spain, in the suburbs of Barcelona, where we were able to take the wheel of the Brand new E-Transit. Our test, of more than one hundred kilometers, allowed to test the different power configurations considered by Ford. Depending on the needs and budget of the user, the brand has provided an electric motor that offers the choice, but only on the rear wheels, 135 or 198 kW for a common pair of 430 Nm. If no four-wheel drive version is currently scheduled, this rear-wheel drive model shows satisfactory handling, even with load and slightly damp asphalt. For maximum safety, the electronics are monitored by a three-position adjustable driving mode (Echo, normal or low grip).
The operation is performed by a large 12-inch touch screen, located in the center of the board, which controls the Sync4 multimedia system. As in the thermal versions, the presentation quality is remarkable and close to the Ford sedans. There is also a lack of equipment with a lot of assistance (automatic brake, cruise control, etc.). Thanks for your modem connected to the internet (FordPass), this vehicle gives access to ” smart ” features to properly plan your route, look for power plants, check the range or state of charge when the vehicle is plugged in. This service may also provide access to other interesting features (but paying) such as the health status of your vehicle, call for assistance, or keep track of your maintenance record. Some can even be used remotely from a smartphone (heating, door closing, geolocation).
For a better distribution of the masses, and not to record the volume of load included between 9.5 and 15.1 m3 (according to available models L2H2 to L4H3 versions), the lithium ion battery which feeds it finds its place under the chassis, between the front and rear axle. A possible spare wheel can even find its place in front. This battery is only available with a usable capacity of 68 kWh. Enough to consider trips of at least 300 km (317 km approved in WLTP standards) before recharging and without exceeding 130 km / h on fast axle (original self-limiting speed).
As we have seen, the loading operation is carried out easily thanks to a hidden hatch in the center of the grille. Once the 8 meter cable connected to a terminal, take the ” full of electrons ” 34 minutes fast charge to 115 kW of direct current (to go from 15 to 80% of its capacity). With the 11.3 kW AC onboard charger, you need to be much more patient and plan 8.2 hours. It is not enough to seduce long-distance road enthusiasts who like to cover 800 km at once with a tank full of diesel.
