Microlino: This mini-pod-shaped electric car is really coming out!

For a while we thought that the nice Microlino, who made us fall in love with the shows, would never see the light of day. This small urban and electric vehicle project finally seems on the right track to success. The first deliveries are scheduled for the end of 2022.

The Microlino prototype was first unveiled in 2018 at the Geneva Motor Show. Then the project got worse. The delays began to build up and the partner, who was originally supposed to produce the vehicle, eventually withdrew from the project. While the brand found itself without a factory to manufacture its electric vehicle, the team took this opportunity to rethink the concept and find a new partner for its manufacture. In the end, the Microlino 2.0 is even more promising than the version 1.0 that never saw the light of day.

Even before the official launch, which took place on May 24, the brand had more than 30,000 reservations for its Microlino. Apparently, we are not the only ones who have succumbed to the charm of this reincarnation of the BMW Isetta of the 50’s. But what do we know about this vehicle?

Several versions of the Microlino

If the design remains the same, this new version 2.0 of the Microlino has evolved a lot in the structure of its frame. While the first version was based on a tubular frame, we now find a monocoque structure, as can be produced by Tesla factories. This offers greater security to the model and above all a better longevity. One thing’s for sure, the brand couldn’t touch its only front door, which is what makes this vehicle so special.

To get an idea of ​​the size of this car, you should know that it is only 2.52 m long, 1.47 m wide and 1.50 m high. The vehicle belongs to the category of quadricycles, is limited to 90 km / h. Unlike the Citroën AMI which is designed for the public without a B license, and which is limited to 45 km / h, this Microlino offers a little more versatility.

The Microlino will be available in a variety of finishes and battery sizes. The Urban finish will be the entry level of the brand with two colors in the catalog. This model will be equipped with the smallest 6 kWh battery that should offer up to 91 km range. This finish will be the last to go into production. It will not be available until mid-2023.

The version Sweet will offer the widest choice with 5 colors available and 3 battery sizes to choose from: 6, 10.5 or 14 kWh. The largest battery can offer up to 230 km range. But the heart of the range will be delivered mainly with the 10.5 kWh battery that already offers 177 km of autonomy.

The medium battery will also be the basic battery of the Competizione versions with its 3 matte colors, with the option to take the large battery.

This 10.5 kWh battery will also be the launch version called Pioneer. A limited series of 999 numbered copies to be delivered with priority to Microlino buyers. They will have a rather high-end equipment for this type of vehicle with: sunroof, green leather interior and alcantara, portable Bluetooth speakers that connect to your phone …

An even more exclusive option at € 1,999

The launch model includes an option that is, to say the least, amazing. For € 1,999 you can join the “Pioneer Club”. This membership, reserved for customers of the first editions, should offer several advantages to unite a community of buyers around the brand:

  • Priority delivery of Microlino (and Microletta) orders
  • the visit of the factory, including the possibility of participating in the assembly of the vehicles,
  • event invitations for pioneer members,
  • free vehicle checks by travel technicians (Flying Doctor),
  • discounts on all current and future accessories,
  • special offers special services.

After the first year, renewing the club subscription only costs € 1,000 / year.

As you may have noticed, even if we don’t have the prices of this Microlino yet, we will be far, far away from the affordable amount of a Citroën AMI. The brand is aimed more at a high-end clientele, although it means that this vehicle can cover 95% of the daily needs of urban travel for a greater number.

Marketing that will start in 2023 for France

It is our Swiss neighbors who will be able to order Microlino as a priority: it must be said that the company is … Swiss. Sales will then spread rapidly to Germany. For other European countries, we will have to wait until 2023.

With any luck, we should discover the first Microlinos in France before the end of 2023. The main challenge for the brand will be to increase the pace of its production tool. Microlino expects 1,500 models by the end of the year. Much more will be needed to satisfy the madness of reservations for the model.
