Electric car. How to know the health of the battery?

In an electric car, the engine is neither the most expensive nor the most sensitive component. The centerpiece is the traction battery. Not content with being worth several thousand euros, it also tends to deteriorate over time. Therefore, autonomy will be reduced in a few years. To make matters worse, there is nothing linear about this deterioration. In particular, it can be accelerated by the number of fast recharges performed, negative temperatures or even heavy use. It is also not recommended to rest 100% too often, except for the rare lithium-iron-phosphate accumulators, such as the Tesla Model 3 propulsion, and complete discharges should be avoided. Finally, some models seem to suffer from a loss of capacity faster than others.

Frequent use of fast charging stations will tend to accelerate battery degradation.

Manufacturers remain cautious

Knowing the state of health of the battery (called “State of Health” or SOH in English) is therefore valuable for any buyer of a used electric vehicle. This lets you know what range of action you can expect and negotiate the price accordingly in case of advanced degradation while the warranty is in place. But information is also important for current homeowners. Especially because the warranty provides for a possible replacement of this part if its capacity falls below a certain percentage, often set at 70%. Aware of what is at stake, the European Union has it in store review its legislation for 2024 in order to simplify consumer access to this data.

loading peugeot e-2008
Peugeot is committed instead to easily provide a certificate of capacity in the event of resale.

Unfortunately, there is no requirement for a manufacturer to notify you of your health today. Only a few of them, such as Peugeot, have promised to do so directly at their commercial site … without doing so systematically. It will be essential to ask your mechanic to provide you with this “certificate of competency” when you bring your e-208, e-2008 or e-Rifter for service. The diagnostic tool will then read it and then send the PDF document by e-mail. All this for free for customers with a service contract including maintenance: others will have to wait for the launch of a package, scheduled for the end of 2022, to take advantage of it. A website has also been created to allow prospective buyers to verify the authenticity of a certificate given to them by the seller.

Integrated into the My Renault application

renault battery certificate
The My Renault application allows you to generate a battery capacity certificate with a validity of three months.
dacia spring and renault twingo e-tech electric
This service is now available on the Renault Twingo E-Tech Electric, but not yet on the Dacia Spring.

Based on its long experience with the Zoe, Renault also tends to give this information quite easily. But recently, via its Mobilize subsidiary for new forms of mobility, the Losange also offers a solution that avoids having to go to the garage. Its My Renault application allows you to generate a battery certificate from data from the Battery Management System (BMS), the management system for this battery. In addition to the famous SOH, the document thus obtained mentions the mileage of the battery, that of the vehicle, as well as the possible existence of a lease agreement for the battery. At the moment, the service is only available on Zoe, Kangoo and Twingo. The Mégane E-Tech and Dacia Spring should be added later. Please note that if this new feature was originally announced as free, you will eventually be charged 49 €. Therefore, it is best to use it only if you have noticed a significant reduction in range or if you plan to sell your vehicle in the near future. Especially because the certificate thus obtained is only valid for three months.

The certificate The beautiful battery becomes Moba

renault zoe moba battery certificate
Moba offers certificates for about thirty models, including the essential Renault Zoe.

Forty-nine euros is also the minimum amount requested by the French company Moba, born just over two years ago with the name “The beautiful battery”. In this case, however, it will be necessary to add the shipping costs of the box, which must be connected to the OBD socket of your vehicle to make a diagnosis, then returned in an already sealed envelope. Only after you receive it will you receive your certificate. Therefore, the procedure is longer and less straightforward than at Renault. In return, it can be applied to some thirty of the most popular models on the market. from the BMW i3 to the Volkswagen e-up !, ID.3 and ID.4 to Kia-Hyundai, MG, Tesla and many more.

More or less simple alternative solutions

aviloo battery capacity certificate
The Austrian company Aviloo has signed a partnership with the German car club ADAC.

The Austrian company Aviloo operates in the same niche and has even just signed a partnership with the powerful German car club ADAC. But their prices are a bit higher, from € 99 excluding promotions, and the very incomplete French translation of your site can deter more than one. Finally, smartphone applications such as Car Scanner, A better route planner (often abbreviated as ABRP) or Power Cruise Control also offer to retrieve this information by connecting an adapter to the OBD socket. With the advantage, in this case, of allowing an easy reuse, even in several vehicles. Power Cruise Control even offers to receive a certificate of proficiency in English. The other side of the coin is that the use of such solutions is not always intuitive.

power control control application

The Power Cruise Control app can generate a battery capacity certificate, as long as you also purchase an OBD adapter.
