The “city of tomorrow” takes its place, without cars

Wooden benches with large sloping backs, supported on plant installations, in the shade of centuries-old banana trees. An invitation to contemplation, to the reappropriation of space, to return time to time, to life. Pots with vegetables, a place for children, families, cultural events, or possibly for a simple drink, and of course bicycle parking. All in the heart of the city of Strasbourg, Place du Temple Neuf. An “Oasis” lined with preserved houses and their magnificent temple and an operation that responds to a call for projects to create spaces in Strasbourg for “ephemeral uses”.

A place also known to motorists who found the opportunity to park at the very doors of the shops, even the ultimate solution for parking on the street near their homes, especially for families, who live in the neighborhood of the cathedral. On the other hand, it should be noted that those who have a road pass in this sector, zone 2, have been informed of the possibility of parking in the neighboring sectors (in zones n ° 4, 6 and 7) until 31 December. October, or take advantage of the Résideo season ticket in the P3 car park in Les Halles or in the Petite France car park … “Not very close by”, we’re sorry.

New uses of public space

The “Oasis” project, with a total budget of 80,000 euros, had already been announced and presented last October. However, its implementation was again the subject of a press conference at the venue this Thursday, because the project has been modified and a program of events has been defined. Other proposals are possible and expected. In his philosophy, the project remains the same. “It is an experiment of ephemeral use of the city, which foreshadows tomorrow, a project that is part of a global reflection on the squares,” recalled First Deputy Mayor Syamak Agha-Babaei. Accompanied by Joël Steffen, a sales and craft assistant, he was reminded that “the use of public space does not have to be fixed and definitive”, and that the aim is to “think of a different way of conceiving the fabric of the city “. , with associations, citizen projects ”to be able to“ give a new look to a square or a neighborhood ”. A view of the city based in particular on the pedestrian plan where the car would find a place, but “rowing” in the car parks under construction.

The car park in question

Contrary to what was announced last October, it is not a quarter of the parking spaces that will be “ephemeral” until August 31, but the entire space that is now affected by this ban. parking. That is, 35 places eliminated. A development that is all logical for real experimentation assures the city and a decision supported by the Directorate of Territory that did not find it right “to have a mixed use of the site,” says the first deputy. A new use that will also be periodically evaluated by mediators. They will interview people right away. “About the new uses of the square that will arise, perhaps also potentially in new conflicts,” explains Syamak Agha-Babaei. But it is not because there is a conflict that we must refrain from experiencing it. At the end of the operation a return will be made, the chosen one promises.

Another great novelty, the result of the consultation with the different actors in the district, sometimes tense, is the designation of blue parking areas (with disc), in order to facilitate the rotations of vehicles. These are the first of the hypercenter, decided mainly at the request of traders. At least twelve seats have been evenly distributed between the adjacent Rue Temple Neuf and the Place du Marché Neuf. Importantly, they will be limited to 40 minutes.

“A rich program of events”

A brand new place that will allow the population to participate in workshops, events, exhibitions, says the city. “One about the climate and the other about bees, with a prominent place in environmental action,” says Salem Drici, the district’s elected official. Meetings, fun workshops for children and families, on public policy, classification and recycling. But also the issue of transport, European issues. Or even stammtischs on Thursdays in the late afternoon, for exchanges with elected officials, around topics such as healthy eating, eating well, the issue of mobility. “The opportunity also of a” rich cultural programming every Saturday or Sunday, continues Salem Drici, with expressions in the public space, to leave space to the imagination, to the poetry, with in particular the participation of the choreographic center and time strong and punctual. such as for the music festival or on July 14th. Finally, some shops in the neighborhood could sometimes make a stand.

The square will be open to the public once the latest developments have been made, in particular the revegetation and installation of car pylons that will surround the square, around 1 June.
