the answers to your questions about the 2024 Electric Scenic

1. The transition to the SUV genre of the latest Renault minivan

Given the boom in SUVs, which began more than a decade ago in Europe, not all manufacturers have chosen the same paths. Two minivans are still in Renault’s catalog in mid-2022, while this body, for example, has not been present at Peugeot since 2017. or Citroën for some time. If this desire to maintain a certain variety in the bodywork is to be praised, it must be acknowledged that the strategy has not borne fruit. At a time when the end of the life of the current Espace i Scénic is sounding, the Losange is making its point and in turn is changing 100% in the world of the SUV.

The Scenic Vision unveiled a few days ago leaves no doubt about the passing of the torch. If we take into account that Espace had already left the world of minivans since 2015, the Scénic is still the last representative of this type for French manufacturers. It will end in 2024 when the Scenic “5” arrives, which will be 90% similar to the concept in the picture.. If retro cameras, active blinds, and CO2-capturing paint don’t pass the course of the series, this 4.50m long, 1.60m tall “2.83m” hatchback silhouette wheelbase is that of the future Scénic.

2. The first real concept of Gilles Vidal

Landed at Renault from Peugeot two years ago, Gilles Vidal had not yet had time to sign a first style studio. He is the one we saw at the very happy presentation of the R5 electric concept last year, but the design of this “revival” was already fixed before his arrival at the Losange. With the Scénic Vision concept, the new Renault-style boss finally puts his foot down and will therefore remain the progenitor of the first SUV in a Scénic way.. On closer inspection, some “tricks” of the recent Peugeots can be found in this silhouette. Starting with vertical LEDs on either side of the front bumper, echoing the fangs of the 208 and 2008 that Vidal, among others, oversaw. With a compact silhouette and quite dynamic, the future Scenic should have no trouble finding its audience.

3. Electric / hydrogen hybridization, why?

Like any concept car, the Scenic Vision carries with it several messages. If in particular we can retain 70% of the recycled materials and 95% of the recyclable materials you use, the most instructive is still its electric / hydrogen hybrid engine. Built on the CMF-EV platform, this concept simply borrows its 40 kWh battery and 220 hp coiled rotor electric motor from the recent Mégane E-Tech. But in addition, this Scenic of the future also hides in its soil a 16 kW fuel cell that transforms the approximately 2.5 kg of hydrogen stored in front into electricity for the engine. Far from being a fiction – this concept is already traveling at almost 90 km / h – this technology could become a reality in 2030 at Renault. Complex and expensive, but it has the advantage of a comfortable autonomy. Because the fuel cell only acts as a range extender.

Obviously, after traveling the 300 km offered by the 40 kWh battery, the traction chain passes to hydrogen for an extension of about 200 km. Each hydrogen refill allows you to travel 200 km again without recharging for hours. Once there and with fixed access to a charging source, you can reconnect the car to charge the battery directly. Currently almost non-existent, the hydrogen pump network does not represent a viable solution. But Renault says that in the event that 100% electric is not liked by everyone in the future, either due to lack of autonomy or lack of access to the load, this hybridization is still possible. Always, of course, to produce hydrogen which is also virtuous …

4. An interior that we are not about to see

Very advanced in the interior, this concept, however, lays an interesting foundation for the future interiors of Renault. At a time when giant screens are invading “cabins” in the same way, forcing designers to make many concessions in the architecture of dashboards and the variety of materials that make them up, this Stage Vision on the contrary remains very crude. Aside from the large speedometer screen at the foot of the windshield inaccessible to passengers, the cockpit consists of several pivoting touchscreen widgets that control as many functions as possible. Many materials and systems are exposed, such as door air purifiers. Again, there is no need to project this board on an upcoming Clio, but the use of very small digital surfaces and colors and materials as varied as favorable is a clue to dig into.
