Ultra fast internet: VOO is catching up with Proximus

Proximus, VOO and Telenet in competition

Three operators are slowly starting to break in this land of the future: Proximus, Telenet and VOO. The former Belgacom is developing its fiber optic network to offer 1 Gbps subscriptions. Cable operators VOO and Telenet rely on their hybrid networks consisting of fiber optics and coaxial cable.

For these three players, these three owners of a fixed network, it is a logistical challenge to deploy the gigabit municipality by municipality. For Proximus, this upgrade often sounds like major work, with the need to run new cables from a district street cabinet to every house, every apartment. VOO and Telenet network upgrade operations are more discreet and less invasive.

€ 10 less per month at VOO

Aside from this deployment marathon, all three operators are waging a price war. Two changes have recently changed the cards:

– Owned by Proximus, Mobile Vikings will offer 1 Gbps subscriptions at very competitive prices starting June 14, 2022, with or without an additional SIM card.

– Available exclusively in Max packages, the VOO Gigaboost option costs € 5 per month from May 2, 2022, compared to the previous € 15.

For VOO, it was an inevitable reduction, as the amount of 15 € penalized the subscriptions to Gigaboost with respect to the competition. For Mobile Vikings, it is a reminder that subsidiaries and other operators have the right to offer gigabit by occupying and renting the Proximus, VOO or Telenet network. Cybernet, for example, is taking advantage of this opportunity.

24 subscriptions compared

After these two adjustments, who offers the most interesting 1 Gbps fixed internet subscriptions? In the following tables, we compare a number of formulas classified into four categories: 1 Gbps “only” Internet, 1 Gbps Internet + a SIM card, 1 Gbps + TV Internet, 1 Gbps Internet + TV + a landline. SIM card +.

Based on these comparisons, we will develop below these five conclusions about the emerging gigabit market in Belgium:

1. VOO is catching up, but …

2. Cable operators have problems with charging

3. Mobile Vikings surprise guest

4. Proximus in strong position

1. VOO is catching up, but …

In terms of prices, VOO has just applied an essential adjustment. Reserved for Max packages, the Gigaboost (1 Gbps) option is now billed at € 5 a month, instead of € 15. Thanks to this move, the operator returns to the race in formulas that combine fixed Internet and a SIM card, at least compared to Proximus. But the arrival of Mobile Vikings in this sector from June 14, 2022 will already put a veil on this effort.

Elsewhere, VOO’s Gigaboost was at best aligned with its competitors’ average prices. The only notable exception: 1 Gbps + TV Internet, a niche where subscribing to VOO is € 7 more expensive per month than Proximus.

2. Cable operators have problems with charging

1 Gbps download speed is the strongest argument in favor of gigabit subscriptions. What about shipping speed? Proximus and the cable operators VOO and Telenet seem to live in very different realities at this level.

In other words: VOO and Telenet offer much lower upload speeds than promised by Proximus fiber. VOO blocks at a maximum of 20 Mbps, Telenet at 40 Mbps, against 100 Mbps at Proximus.

3. Mobile Vikings surprise guest

Starting June 14, 2022, Mobile Vikings will take off its mobile carrier disguise for an operator that also offers fixed services. The Proximus subsidiary will offer 1 Gbps fiber optic subscriptions at very competitive prices. A maximum of fixed and mobile Internet services (SIM cards) can be combined. At the moment, there is no digital television or landline on the horizon.

4. Proximus in strong position

With its fiber optics, its subscriptions and those of its subsidiary Mobile Vikings, Proximus is strongly present on the gigabit battlefield. The former Belgacom is also forcing customers in areas already equipped with fiber, sometimes multiplying the steps and telephone invitations to opt for fiber optics.

5. A territory still virgin

The deployment of gigabit on the Proximus, VOO and Telenet networks takes time. In this long race, Proximus seems to hold the rope. This page mentions 109 cities already connected to the operator’s fiber. Upcoming works are scheduled in Verviers.

At the VOO camp, the Gigaboost option is available in Liège, Wavre, Charleroi, Anthisnes, Aywaille, Beauvechain, Berloz, Braives, Burdinne, Comblain-au-pont, Donceel, Engis, Esneux, Faimes, Geer, Héron, Incourt, Jalhay . , Marchin, Modave, Nandrin, Sprimont, Stavelot, Verlaine and Villers-le-Bouillet. Next big goal: Brussels. The goal is to cover one in two customers in Wallonia in 2023.
