In its simple hybrid version, the Kia Sorento SUV contains its consumption and drives further than the PHEV version thanks to its larger tank. It is also € 5,644 cheaper and available in seven locations.
Kia has drawn a line under the diesel for its high-end Sorento SUV. Since the launch of this fourth-generation model in 2021, only a plug-in hybrid engine (PHEV) has been offered with the limitations of use linked to this technology: connect the vehicle as often as possible to make the most of it. electric. .
In 2022, the Korean brand ends the Sorento range with a simple hybrid version combining a power of 230 hp and a 4 x 2 transmission, instead of 265 hp and a 4 x 4 transmission for the PHEV version. Available as five or seven seater, this family-friendly Sorento hybrid (4.81m long) is easier to use (no plug) and cheaper.
Price Kia Sorento hybrid 2022
Offered from € 42,490 in the basic Motion version and € 55,440 for our generously equipped seven-seater Premium version (see all the equipment on the next page), the Sorento hybrid is € 7,500 cheaper than the PHEV version. A difference, however, reduced to € 5,644 due to the effect of the malus and the weight tax (see table on the next page), from which the PHEV escapes.
It’s still a good difference. For an individual, the hybrid will be more profitable, while the plug-in hybrid version will often be preferred by companies for tax reasons (TVS exemption and higher payback ceiling). Good thing to know: if you don’t need seven seats, the five-seater model is priced at € 950 cheaper, and reduces the weight tax a bit.
The generous size of this SUV is a bit intimidating in parking lots and narrow streets, but the Sorento is mostly evolving with the heat engine off, as the electric block guarantees the start and speed of up to 30-40 km / h . This is pretty good for a simple hybrid SUV of this size and also plays in favor of fuel consumption, which stabilizes at around 6.5 l / 100 km in the long-distance environment.
On the road, the Korean reveals his condition as a traveler with excellent comfort and extensive soundproofing. The wide front seats give the impression of traveling in armchairs, and the numerous physical controls make it easier to use the car. The steering is a bit floating around the midpoint and the calming chassis lacks agility, but this familiar SUV is nice to drive to the beat of a senator. If the Sorento leaves the Peugeot 5008 the role of dynamic SUV, the latter, however, is not available as a hybrid. Consumption is controlled for two reasons: the vehicle is deprived of diesel and the price of fuel is going crazy.
However, after a 170 km road trip made at normal speeds (from 70 to 110 km / h depending on the portions and crossings of villages), our meter shows 6.8 l / 100 km. We couldn’t have done better with a diesel! On the other hand, the fighter is less in his case on the highway, with an average of 9.3 l / 100 km at 130 km / h (beware of rising consumption beyond this limit!) . This is not a surprise, it is even a value that is often found in gasoline hybrid SUVs. For good reason: in this type of journey the contribution of hybridization is very low, and the construction of the car unfavorable to aerodynamics. The Sorento hybrid, however, confirms its passenger status with its own 67 l fuel tank, that is, 20 l more than PHEV, which benefits from its autonomy.
At this large size of more than 4.80 m, SUVs are often rechargeable and premium hybrids (BMW X5, Volvo XC90). This is reflected in prices, which are then stratospheric. The Kia Sorento hybrid finds competitors at the lower level (Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V), but the services are not as clean as the Korean ones. The strongest competition is with the cousin Hyundai Santa-Fe, which has the same mechanics. Thus, the two compatriots are almost the only ones playing this card of the seven-seater hybrid family SUV.
