Do you no longer want them to follow you on every move on the Internet? The private browsing window will not be enough: you must opt for a solution that can hide your IP address to make it untraceable. We tell you how to do it, it’s super easy.
Tired of being spied on for all your actions on the Internet? We understand. In France, 28% of Internet users use a VPN to avoid being tracked when browsing the Internet. With these tools, they can browse all websites without leaving a trace. This has nothing to do with the simple “private browsing” window which is not strictly anonymous.
Here’s how to surf the Internet without leaving a trace. The easiest way is to opt for VPN software (for both computers and mobile phones) that gives you maximum privacy with a single click. Otherwise, you can check out our guide to 8 ways to stay anonymous online.
Use private browsing (not recommended)
In almost all web browsers, it is possible to have partial protection using a private browsing window. The latter is often adapted in a black color to distinguish it from the classic window which, by default, is not private. By opting for private mode, your browser will not store your search history, store cookies, or save fields on forms.
In the Chrome browser, go to the “File” menu and select “New private browsing window” to activate this mode. If you’re familiar with shortcuts, just type Ctrl + Shift + N on a Windows computer to open a tab with this secret mode. On an Apple computer, you need to replace Ctrl with the Command key.
Is private browsing really that private? The reality is … no. Our colleagues at Presse-citron have made a file explaining that private browsing does not allow you to hide your activity from your ISP, the places where you connect, or even the owners of the Wi-Fi terminals you use. So we have to be very careful: anonymous browsing is simply a way of not storing data in the browser. On the other hand, it is not strictly a software to be anonymous.
A VPN to become 100% anonymous
Need full anonymity to surf the Internet without a trace? In this case, we invite you to opt for a VPN software that does not save any records. This is the case, for example, with NordVPN, which gives you maximum privacy when browsing online. Its interface is very easy to learn, even the most novice will be able to take advantage of it.
The principle of VPN is to create a virtual tunnel that allows you to 1) hide your IP address, 2) encrypt all your data, and therefore 3) become completely anonymous on the network. Our privacy summary is available here. If all the publishers of these technologies are not the same, the European company NordVPN is one of the great benchmarks in the world.
Specifically, the VPN will run in the background on your computer, without slowing down your machine or your internet connection (for the best software). You will be able to encrypt your traffic, which cannot be read by your ISP. The websites you visit will also not know who is behind this anonymous IP address. In the end, you have absolute freedom on the Internet.
VPNs are legal and does not pose a security problem. Beyond network anonymity, its principle offers many different uses that have attracted millions of users. For example, VPNs will encrypt all your data, which will protect you on all the public Wi-Fi networks you can use (internships at stations, airports, trains, etc.). In addition, VPNs allow you to travel to virtually anywhere in the world to access blocked programs in certain regions (TV channels, streaming platforms, etc.).
Today, the only way to be completely anonymous is use an unregistered VPN. If you’ve heard of the TOR network before, it’s not really anonymous and even heavy. When it comes to browsing, this is clearly not what we recommend for everyday use.
If you need to convince yourself of the effectiveness of a NordVPN, for example (or an ExpressVPN), nothing could be simpler: there is a 30-day trial period that allows you to fully test the service without limitations. You see, it’s very easy to handle. With just one click, you can become completely anonymous and surf the Internet without a trace.
Our opinion: A very good VPN for security and anonymity
