Pay to take the bus or bicycle instead of the car. This is the proposed concept Ecomode. Available on the smartphone (Google Play and App Store) from Monday, May 9, 2022, this new application, which is currently shown in the metro Toulouseproposes to reward citizens who use low-carbon modes of transport.

Exclusively for Toulouse Métropole

Deployed exclusively in the 37 municipalities of the conurbation of Toulouse, the Ecomode application is the result of a collaboration between Metropolis of Toulouse, Tisseo, Airbus i Above Steria. The project is funded by three energy companies: TotalEnergies, EDF i Crossroads.

Officially unveiled in 2020, the project aims to experiment, for three years, with a loyalty system which values and rewards clean and alternative trips to the individual car.

And the different partners have ambitious goals. By the end of 2022, they are waiting 15,000 users. A figure they want to double in 2023 to reach 30,000 users. If they could reach so many people, they could save 26 million miles by car and 600 tons of CO2, or the equivalent of one million liters of fuel by the end of 2023.

Drive clean, get gifts

Specifically, the application will offer the user the option to make a trip in a more environmentally friendly way. For example, in car sharing with the Karos app, VeloToulouse or inside bus, tram On Subway Tisseo. A calculator will then measure the CO2 savings made with these alternatives.

Once you have chosen the mode of transport, all you have to do is travel. Once completed, the app rewards the user with points. By using Ecomode as often as possible, the user accumulates these points that offer benefits in the online catalog of the application.

There, it is possible to pay subscriptions Tisseo, various products (water bottles, wallets, bags, etc.), coupons to local sellers or major national brands (Decathlon, Intersport, La Redoute, etc.) or participate in a lucky draw to win major prizes (an electric bike for example).

An application tested by Airbusians

Airbus and Sopra Steria have offered to be beta testers of the app.

“The interest is to maximize individual efforts to bring them into synergy. The goal is to get companies and communities to align, but also to get citizens and employees to pull towards this decarbonisation that everyone aspires to. “This is an issue that reminded us of the latest IPCC report, which is quite alarming as it gives us three years to react. This is one of the key reasons for Airbus’ voluntary commitment.”

Bruno CostesSenior Director of Institutional Relations and Standardization Airbus – France

With Ecomode, the industrial giant hopes to reduce emissions related to the travel of its employees. “In Toulouse, through the program SWITCH, we have identified that every time we travel at rush hour, we lose 20 minutes on half hour travel. Accumulated for one year, this corresponds to 11 business days of lost productivity for companies ”, explains Bruno Costes, who wants to point out that, in addition to the impact on employers, these trips also cause avoidable CO2 emissions, stress and an impact on the quality of life.

19 tons of CO2 avoided by 1,615 people

At Airbus, the COMMUTE program has been demonstrated. The proportion of employees who come by bicycle has increased from 6-12% to 20%. “It simply came to our notice then. This is the meaning of Ecomode’s experimentation “, continues Bruno Costes.

In the ranks of the aircraft manufacturer, 1,615 users from Toulouse used the app between November 2021 and early May 2022. “We’ve had 19 tons of CO2 have been avoided. If we calculate, this corresponds to the energy needed to watch 6,000 episodes of 60 minutes of a streaming series “, explains the director of institutional relations.

Airbus wants to deploy this system in all its locations

Ecomode already plans to deploy in other territories. “The experimentation is positive for Airbus. After the training in the 37 municipalities of the Metropolis, we want to deploy the application to the other Airbus facilities, in France and why not abroad,” announces Bruno Costes.

“Ecomode was developed in open source so we could easily duplicate the system in other territories.”

The main employers will take part

In addition to Airbus and Sopra Steria, other big businessmen have joined or will join the adventure. This is especially the case forEDFme ‘Toulouse Blagnac Airport, Saffron, ATR, Such, Continental

With Ecomode, these companies will be able to access the anonymous travel data of their employees. A way to get an idea of the amount of CO2 saved during commuting.

In return, internal challenges will be organized among employees. For example, you can reward the worker who uses the bike the most, as well as the one who makes the most effort to reduce their carbon footprint. Again, these winners will be rewarded with great prizes!
