Kezako la Matura in a few figures
Matura (fr. Baccalaureate) -formerly called the maturity exam- is a symbolic moment of entry into adulthood for all Poles. A good pass on the high school exam opens the door to higher education. Period of reviews, stress and often sleepless nights, both for the candidates and for the families!
In 2009, 430,000 high school students passed the baccalaureate in Poland.
The population decline doing its job, in 2019, was less than 250,000.
Today, during this month of May 2022, 289,000 high school students take the exam, including 41 from Ukraine.
The choice of high school, courses
Access to the baccalaureate is made by file in Poland, after an exam that closes the education received in primary, to 8th: Examination osmoklasisty. The 8th year corresponds to the 4th year of university in France. Therefore, the choice of high school and courses is essential. This is the first step in a long process of guidance.
It is true that the training offer may vary in certain institutes, but there are general profiles, guaranteed in all schools in Poland, for example: mathematics, humanities and literature, geography, biology and chemistry, foreign languages or computer science.
The choice of courses is essential for high school preparation. Students are more likely to choose high school subjects in which they have a higher number of specific subjects.
The structure of the Matura, compulsory and optional subjects!
The general baccalaureate requires a correct level in basic subjects such as Polish, mathematics and foreign languages. These subjects are compulsory for everyone and you must obtain at least 30% to pass them.
In addition, everyone chooses at least one optional subject which they must then take at an advanced level.
In each baccalaureate the student has the possibility to take a few optional tests (maximum 6). In this case, there is no percentage threshold as at the beginner level. In most cases, however, students choose advanced level subjects.
A novelty for this 2022 session: oral exams are not mandatory. They will be organized only for those who need the result of this examination in the recruitment procedure in a higher education institution abroad.
Exam modalities, high school, technikum, szkoła branżowa
The exam is usually held between the ages of 18 and 19. But the high school exam can be taken at any age and more and more people are taking this challenge after several years or even decades.
As for the students, they have to pass all the subjects to pass the baccalaureate. The teacher has the right not to admit a student to high school only by giving a negative grade to his subject at the end of the school year. In this case, the baccalaureate is postponed to the end of the following year.
Not only does the institute offer the possibility of passing the baccalaureate, but also the technical school (technikum). The main difference between schools is the number of years it takes to complete their studies and obtain a degree.
From 2019, education in secondary school lasts 4 years, in technical school 5 years and in vocational school (szkoła branżowa) only 3 years. At the end of the baccalaureate you obtain the baccalaureate degree and the possibility of pursuing the baccalaureate.
At the end of a technical school, students obtain a high school diploma, but also a professional qualification, confirmed by an exam. However, a vocational training qualification is not enough. In this case, two additional baccalaureate courses (II r.) Must also be taken to pass the baccalaureate.

Pandemic 2020/2021 vs Baccalaureate
The preparations for the baccalaureate of the last two years have been completely different from those of the previous years. The pandemic has brought about great changes in education. Students had online classes, mainly through the Teams platform. Opinions about online education are still divided. For some it was a blessing, for others it was a curse.
Martyna from Łódź believes that she is one of the few people who prefers online courses. It turns out that the pandemic did not have a negative impact on their preparation for high school. During the online courses, in the first place, I saved a lot of time on trips between home and school, breaks or subjects I did not take. “In addition, the pandemic has not only changed the way we teach but also the structure of the high school.” The pandemic has contributed to the suppression of oral exams, which I think is an advantage. she adds. On the other hand, most students in his class believe that the pandemic has caused chaos in schools.
“I am aware of being one of the few people who preferred the teaching method during the pandemic. Most of my friends complain about the lack of motivation, for me, online classes are better! » Martyna de Łódź
