An old and rare car made in Castres in the 1920s was sold at auction on Saturday

the essential
On Saturday, the price will be Voisin C4S manufactured by a bodybuilder from Castres in 1924 and belonging to a wealthy textile industry in the region. A rare vehicle.

This is a rare piece that allows you to delve into the history of Castres, which will be auctioned on Saturday by the Stanislas Machoïr studio in Toulouse at the Château de Lasserre in Montastruc-La-Conseillère. A Voisin car manufactured in the 1920s in Castres and formerly owned by a local industrialist with a budget of between 60,000 and 80,000 euros will be presented. But bids are likely to go up.
Gabriel Voisin (1880-1973) was with his brother Charles one of the most famous pioneers of aeronautics in the early twentieth century. He founded factories with Louis Blériot, the famous aviator. After commercial success during the First World War with 10,400 aircraft produced, it was launched into the automobile in 1919 with the C1. In 1921 the C4 was launched which will run until December 1925 in 900 copies, bare chassis. Produced with a 1,248 cc engine, it will go on sale from September 25, 1923 with a more powerful 1,328 cc engine under the name C4 S. The car auctioned on Saturday is the last C4 S produced.
This last frame would have been planned for Louis Blériot, his lifelong friend, but it was eventually acquired by a wealthy textile industrialist in Roquecourbe: Henri Fabre de Massaguel. He entrusted the chassis to a bodybuilder from Castres “La Carrosserie Castraise” who produced an elegant coupe de ville, which can be called “Fiacre” because its cut is similar to the Bugatti 44 “Fiacre”. It can also be compared to the Voisin “Valse Bleue” from the Marcel collection, played by Simon Pralavorio from Lyon (classified as a historical monument, estimated at € 130,000 in a 2019 sale).
At that time, both Castres and Mazamet were flourishing textile capitals. Local manufacturers owned luxury cars, Bugatti, Voisin, and asked bodybuilders to do their naked chassis shopping. Castres in the 1920s was then known for these luxury bodybuilders.
The car remained in the hands of its owner for 50 years, before leaving the Tarn family factory and being sold to a car lover to the Gers who had just died. This auction is effectively part of a succession.

In excellent condition

Restored more than 40 years ago, the car is in excellent condition, but requires a mechanical overhaul for road use. A rare piece, in its original state without transformation. End of the end: it is accompanied by its small wicker basket of snacks with its jugs, heater and porcelain cups.
“Five years ago we auctioned a Voisin C18 coupe for 900,000 euros, a unique car, an unbeatable world record,” said the auctioneer, who did not expect the Voisin castraise presented on Saturday to be auctioned at such a high price. The car we present, also unique for a C4 S, is still available to many collectors. »
The car can now be seen at the Château de Lasserre in Montastruc-La-Conseillère. And the auction can be done on-site, by phone or online.

A unique 4 CV beach made in the Tarn also at auction

Another Tarn car will also go on sale on Saturday. A Renault 4 CV plage manufactured in 1956 by the famous Ghia bodybuilder (only about fifty), a popular car that has become a must-have luxury for the Jet-Set. The model presented has been completely redone in an exceptional way down to the smallest detail by a passionate enthusiast from the Lavaur region. It is in practically new condition. “A real marvel when you know that there are only less than ten left,” says the auctioneer who put the price between 20,000 and 25,000 euros. If we count the hours of work dedicated, this realization would have cost between 50,000 and 60,000 € ”.
