Spoiler Warning: Dune (2021)

Denis Villeneuve Dunes it was nothing short of sublime. It’s an almost perfect adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 sci-fi novel that many thought was impossible to make for the screen because of its rich global construction. of Villeneuve Dunes it achieves the rare feat of appeasing pre-existing fans of books as well as attracting a new set of viewers. And to everyone’s delight, the spice finally flows and continues Dunes: Part II will begin in July.

“It was one of my dreams to adapt Frank Herbert ‘s film Dunes, and I have the fans, the cast and the team, Legendary and Warner Bros. thank you for supporting this dream. This is just the beginning, “Villeneuve said after the sequel was given the green light. So I work with the same team, everyone knows what to do, we know what it will be like. The movie is going to be harder, but we know where we’re going. And the script is written. So I feel confident. »

Although Villeneuve has expressed doubts about the pandemic causing possible unforeseen delays, we know we are getting the second part. So let’s dive into everything we know Dunes: Part II Bye now.

Dune II: the plot

While the first part represents very well the history and politics of Dunes, the story ends on a cliff. Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) and his mother, Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), join the Fremen in their struggle to bring peace to Arrakis. On the way to the Fremen house, Paul sees a Fremen member riding a sand worm, which he eventually learns to do himself.

Villeneuve always planned to split the 800-page novel into two parts. This is part of the agreement between Legendary and Warner Bros. which brought Villeneuve on board. He told IndieWire that he chose to end the first part where Paul would join the Fremen because he would leave the audience wanting more:

“If we look at the trajectory of Paul, who is a child who tries to find his place in the world and in the end becomes an adult to be able to put himself in front, it is a very important moment in the life of a young man. to cut down their land. Paul’s bow is complete for this first part. Now, the fact that people come out saying “I wanted more” is a total victory! »

Dunes: Part II it will focus on Paul’s rise to power and the subsequent rebellion against Emperor Padishah Shaddam IV. Paul will adopt the name Muad’Dib, the Fremen name of the resilient desert mouse that Paul and his mother are on their way to find the Fremen. The sequel will feature Princess Irulan, the emperor’s eldest daughter, and Anirul, another member of the mysterious matriarchal order, Bene Gesserit, as Lady Jessica. Paul marries Princess Irula. She becomes the narrator of the book and a key character who is left out of the first film, which focused mainly on the house Atreides, the Bene Gesserit and Paul’s introduction to the world outside his home planet, Caladan.

Zendaya, who plays warrior Fremen Chani and Paul’s lover, may have only had seven minutes of screen time in the first film, but she will play a more important role in the sequel. Outside of much more Zendaya, expect much more from Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård) as well as House of Harkonnen and the Fremen in the sequel. The film will also feature Feyd-Rautha, heir to the Harkonnen house and the young nephew of Baron Vladimir. The role was played by rocker Sting in the 1984 adaptation of David Lynch, which was considered a complete disaster.

The sequel will trace the rise of Paul as Kwisatz Haderach, a magnificent and messiah with mental powers who would unite space and time, born from a breeding program led by the manipulations of the Bene Gesserit. It will also feature the new member Atreides, the daughter of Lady Jessica and the late Duke Leto (Oscar Isaac), Alia Atreides, who will become an advancing central character. Dunes also set aside details about Lady Jessica’s affiliation, which will also be a great revelation (at least for viewers) to the audience.

Dune II: The Cast

Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, c, Javier Bardem (as the leader of Fremen Stilgar), Dave Bautista (as the sadistic sequence of Baron Glossu Rabban) and Stellan Skarsgård will return in the second installment. It is also confirmed that Florence Pugh and Austin Butler will star in the sequel. Josh Brolin’s Gurney Halleck survives the Harkonnen’s attack on the books, so we can expect to see him reunite with the rest of the cast.

While Pugh will play Princess Irulan, Butler will play Feyd-Rautha.

Will Dune be a trilogy?

Villeneuve has also expressed interest in adapting Herbert’s 1969 sequel novel, dune messiahs, in a third film, but only time will tell if we just got these two films, a trilogy, or an entire franchise from this sci-fi series. If that happens, then Jason Momoa’s Duncan Idaho might have a way of resurrecting them as gholas, who were essentially clones. It belongs to Paul’s vision of a holy intergalactic war that unleashes his name, where the Fremen will end up killing billions. dune messiahs.

Date of publication

seen the reception Dunes received, a trilogy does not seem unlikely. At the moment, Dunes: Part II filming will begin in July 2022 and hit theaters in 2023.
