Game news The 6 standalone games of the week you can’t miss (PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Switch)

As every week, the world of indie games has a thousand and one reserved surprises, which we are pleased to echo here at JV. On this week’s program, April 25-May 1, 2022: Science Fiction Tactics on a Known Planet and the Return of Two Independent Nuggets. Follow the leader!

WARS OF DUNE SPECIES

Does “Dune” mean anything to you? Yes, it is the famous universe created by author Frank Herbert and recently adapted into film. At the heart of the story, we find the planet Arrakis, completely covered in sand, where different peoples are fighting to control the species, a substance with supernatural powers. It is in this distant world where the French of Shiro Games (Northguard, Evoland) have set the stage for their new project: Dune Spice Wars. A game that describes itself as “4X Real-Time Strategy Game” and Steam. The goal will be very simple: to wage war to control the species and Arrakis. You can choose from four famous factions, the Atreides, Harkonnen, Smugglers and Fremen. “Finding the balance between open warfare, duplicity, political negotiation and economic supremacy.” It makes you fly!

LA SERRP PIROLA

In the second game, a completely different universe. In The Serpent Rogue, you play as the Guardian, “a mysterious alchemist who must use his skills to protect a realm from the terrible corruption” we can learn on Steam. The person responsible for corruption? The Rogue Serpent, which you will have to face. The title describes itself as an exploration-focused action and adventure game in a medieval world, with alchemy, wild creatures. The idea is to search every corner of the map for new knowledge to complete your search. The project even seems to offer interesting combinations of potions, all with a very successful artistic direction. A love affair of the year that we did not expect?

THE STANLEY ULTRA DELUXE PARABLE

If you play freelance games often, you must have heard of The Stanley Parable, a narrative “walking simulator” released in 2013. It doesn’t make us younger! Surprisingly, the superb Crows studio title Crows Crows returns in an Ultra Deluxe edition, almost ten years after its first edition. The concept remains the same but on a much larger scale (the game was pretty short at the time). You are Stanley, whose path seems to have been traced first by the directions of a narrator. The goal of the game is to constantly contradict this voiceover, whose speech will be adapted accordingly, going out of the way. A concept that will make you discover many secrets, sometimes very surprising. If Crows Crows Crows manages to expand its concept with so much talent, we have without a doubt one of the best games of the year.

PLEASE LEGACY 2

We continue with another very important name in the independent game, also back. Starting April 28, Rogue Legacy 2 will be released after two years of early access and will arrive on PC, Xbox One and series (not yet in Game Pass). A long-awaited match. Its predecessor, Rogue Legacy, helped rogue-lite return to prominence, with games such as Spelunky and The Binding of Isaac. The idea is very simple: face randomly generated areas over and over until you see the end of the game, picking up permanent updates that will help you along the way. But Rogue Legacy does it in a fun way. Each new trial is the new descendant of the same family. This second part, of course, picks up on this principle, with a number of other improvements. In short, we look forward to trying it out.

DEVIL MANUFACTURER

An intriguing “horror kitchen simulator”, right? Well, this is the description of the latest Bad Vices project: Voracious devils. Under the pretext of being the friendly tailor Percival, in fact, you do a business that makes its mess with corpses, in a city plagued by corruption and poverty. Therefore, you need to attract customers and choose the best time to kill them. Beyond its rather fun postulate, Ravenous Devils seems to offer a good planning cocktail (Hitman style) as well as a whole management part. Because obviously, it will be necessary to recycle the clothes of the clients to guarantee their activity of tailor, and not to waste any piece as far as the kitchen. An original and certainly solid experience, only in “4 hours of play”.

soulless

Finally we end with Unsouled, a newcomer to the hotly contested 2D anime category. The title, which comes out of early access and will be available as soon as it comes out via the Xbox Game Pass, seems especially dynamic, with a demanding combat system based on a good mastery of rhythm in particular to chain the blows. “In Unsouled, each power has its own sequence time,” we can learn on Steam. So one thing is certain: training should not be neglected. As you progress, you will encounter increasingly powerful enemies, but also new skills to improve your character. All in a good artistic direction in pixel art. Definitely solid!
