Times are tough for car myth lovers! Not only do coupes and convertibles, bodies historically linked to the idea of ​​a certain driving pleasure, tend to gradually disappear in favor of SUVs, but these new models are also being silenced most of the time by becoming electric or hybrid. . The recent arrival of the Mach-E Mustang in the Ford range is a good illustration of this phenomenon, although the iconic Fastback coupe has not yet said its last word. Although rather daring for an SUV, the newcomer is not as slender as the “real” Mustang, while the gurgling of the big atmospheric V8 is now a distant memory. Apart from the absence of malus, there are, therefore a priori not enough to distract the purist, mainly because the performance of the Mach-E had until then remained lower than that of the thermal coupe, with a time at best of 5.8 s in the 0 to 100 km / h.

With its elevated coupe silhouette, the Mach-E has a particularly dynamic style for an SUV. It measures 4.74 m long and 1.88 m wide.

So the new GT version offered today is trying legitimize a little more Mach-E’s membership in the Mustang family giving the driver an extra dose of adrenaline. Power has been increased to 487 hp and the torque seems especially generous, showing a total of 860 Nm distributed over all four wheels. Accelerations gain in a natural way in intensity, with a shot from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.4 s, a time equivalent to that of the Mach 1 thermal equipped with the automatic gearbox. Note that if Ford mentions above all the value of 3.7 s in this exercise, it is not obtained with a real start (“rolling start”). Visually, this GT version can be distinguished from the rest of Mach-E thanks to the black polycarbonate grille, the more open specific front bumper, as well as the 20-inch wheels, while the colors of the body Grabber Blue and Cyber ​​Orange are exclusive. .

Available from € 77,490, the Mustang Mach-E GT states 11 990 € more than the AWD version, equipped with large 99 kWh battery. Of course, at this price level, you do not benefit from any bonus. Autonomy and recharge time

Equipped with the same 99 kWh battery (88 kWh of usable capacity) as the AWD Extended Range version, on board which we performed our range test last spring, the Mach-E GT offers, according to Ford, a barely lower range, with 500 km. announced in the WLTP cycle (540 km for the Mach-E AWD Extended Range). At the end of our test, during which we naturally wanted to test the performance of the vehicle with a fairly heavy foot, the on-board computer showed an average consumption of 25 kWh per 100 km. What gives us a real range of about 400 km in a very sporty driving. On the other hand, if we rely on the 240 km traveled and 32% battery life a priori remaining, the autonomy would then approach 350 km. In terms of charging, with a DC charger that accepts a maximum power of 150 kW, it is possible to recover 10 to 80% of the battery in 45 minutes in a suitable terminal.

The accelerations are worthy of the Mustang GT with its naturally aspirated V8. At 0 to 100 km / h it flies in just 4.4 seconds.

The electric motor forces, the pleasure provided by this Mach-E GT does not start as soon as the power button is pressed. At the same time, in the cabin, the typical presentation of Tesla with the huge 15.5-inch center screen reminds us that no V8 sleeps under the beautiful curved hood. We can also find a pity that this interior does not have a more sporty presentation than the other versions. Aside from the seats with a specific profile and the GT logo on the center armrest, the atmosphere is generally very (too?) Serious.

Early accelerations with the Untamed driving mode confirm that, even in silence, this new type of Mustang is capable of attaching the driver to the seat and plant facing the most shameless muscle cars. Performance will hardly impress those who have already tasted a Porsche Taycan Turbo S or the more powerful Tesla models, but it remains at an excellent level despite a significant loss of thrust beyond 120 km / h. On the other hand, where the Mach-E GT pleasantly surprises the fan of old sports cars, it is for its behavior on the road, which reveals in the cornering sequences a type of propulsion quite new in this segment of electric SUVs.

In fact, the generous 860 Nm of torque is distributed 70% at the rear axle and 30% at the front. As a result, a slightly forceful overflow coming out of a bend will inevitably cause a drift of the rear axle, more or less marked according to the insistence of the right foot and the grip of the road. The rather greasy and wet roads of our test route have also accentuated this playful character, which may surprise those accustomed to the very neutral behavior of other models in the segment. Beyond this “old-fashioned” side, which shouldn’t displease fans of thermal Mustangs, the Mach-E GT shows great efficiency and even some rigor if you don’t provoke it too much. .

Unlike other versions, the GT benefits from the MagneRide adaptive suspension. This contributes to the very good handling of this heavy machine and allows not to feel the 2,270 kg that appear on the scale, with a perfectly controlled roll. Although quite firm, this suspension retains a totally honest comfort, absorbing most of the roughness of the road without pushing passengers too hard. For its part, the steering is surprising at first glance with its slightly artificial face, but in the end it offers a good consistency and is quite faithful to the winding, allowing the front axle to be placed with great precision. When it comes to braking, if it generally seems effective, it is often quite difficult to dose because of the feel on the pedal, especially in sports driving. Finally, keep in mind that one of the specifics of this GT version is the appearance of an Untamed Plus mode, which is supposed to increase the burning side of the car by lowering the intervention threshold of the ESP. Unfortunately, we have not been able to test it, the test vehicles in our test do not allow it.

On board

If the quality of the finish is of a very good standard, we regret that the presentation is so sober. We are far from the atmosphere on board the “real” Mustangs, with large countertops and round aerators. As for the huge center screen, it’s too reminiscent of Tesla’s interior.

Competition

The main rival of this new Mustang Mach-E GT, also American, we find next to Tesla. The performance of the Y model is in fact very similar in features (4.75 m long, from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.7 s) and is also shown at a more affordable price (€ 66,990) despite a slightly higher performance. For the glamorous side, however, we will return … The Jaguar I-Pace EV400 is also quite close to the Mach-E GT and, like its rival, benefits from a very elegant style for an SUV. Its presentation is even more premium, while its price is, in short, quite comparable (€ 79,990).

The most threatening competitor, however, could be the recent Kia EV6 in its GT version. With a more crossover style but very daring, it is even more efficient (584 hp, 0 to 100 km / h in 3.5 seconds) and also less expensive (€ 66,990). On the other hand, we will have to wait until the end of 2022 to see it land on our roads. Finally, among the German premiums, only the Mercedes EQC 400, although less sporty, could possibly compete with the Mach-E GT, while the BMW iX3 and the Audi Q4 e-tron 50 quattro clearly cannot compete in terms of to benefits.
