President of the Republic, there has never been one in France. Could a comic book heroine have access to this male role? The world of comics does little better than the world of politics. There are not many women who play a leading role in French comics. Especially if you remove from the list the puppets or those that exist only because of their advantageous plastic, any forward chest and conquering neckline.
Adèle Blanc-Sec is one of the heroines who frustrates stereotypes. Created in 1976 by Jacques Tardi, his adventures include nine albums released by Casterman. He had a film adaptation directed by Luc Besson in 2010 with Louise Bourgoin in the lead role. It therefore enjoys a certain notoriety. I presented the idea of his choice to Christophe Quillien. Author of several books on comics, he wrote in 2014 They, great adventurers and fatal comics women published by Huginn & Muninn.
Comic book heroines, potential candidates, aren’t there many in Franco-Belgian comics?
Christophe Quillien: There are heroines with human and intellectual qualities. I think of Laureline Valeriana, series designed from the script by Pierre Christin and designed by Jean-Claude Mézières. In fact, it plays the main role even if the title of the series was Valerian, Space-Time Agent. Another beautiful heroine is Yoko Tsuno created at the same time, in 1970, by Roger Leloup. She is brilliant with a profession, electronic engineering, which was considered masculine. More recently, there is Kim Keller imagined by Brazilian author Léo a The worlds of Aldebarán. Kim Keller is the center of the series and has important responsibilities in these adventures.
It is interesting to note that they are all heroes of science fiction. Adèle Blanc-Sec lives at the beginning of the 20th century and, for all this, she is modern, even advanced in her time …
Christophe Quillien: It is true that she does not know the condition of most women of her time. Adèle Blanc-Sec is single, independent. She is an author. He writes popular novels that we don’t know if they are very successful. In any case, it is enough to make her live, because she is always elegant and lives in a luxury Haussmann building in Paris. It is less the reflection of a woman of her time than that of her creator. Adèle Blanc-Sec is the heiress of the women’s rights struggles that have taken place since the 1960s and of which Tardi has always felt close.
Feminist, is that how you would present yourself to the French?
Christophe Quillien: Yes, she is clearly a feminist and I would say she is. She is determined, she does not give up. I think he has ambition too. These are active to introduce you.
Adèle Blanc-Sec has assets but is not a soft and perfect heroine. What defect could cost you votes?
Christophe Quillien: He has a great character. It is not easy and does not handle the language of wood. It gives it a certain charm but daily or during a presidential campaign it doesn’t have to be easy to live with. It would risk upsetting its electorate. In addition to their political views that could offend a part of the population.
Because ? Is Adèle Blanc-Sec politically extreme?
Christophe Quillien: He has an anarchist inclination that comes from its creator Tardi. Institutions, the state, I’m not sure that’s what you prefer. Plus, he doesn’t like the police. Needless to say, the cops around him are especially incompetent. She prefers to rub shoulders with thugs and outcasts. Finally, one never knows, if something, an injustice, really revolted her, could be launched in the race for the presidency.
