When you download files from the Internet, using the Internet Explorer browser, you limit the files that you can download at the same time. By default, Internet Explorer allows you to download up to 6 files at a time. In fact, in IE7 and earlier, the limit was only two files!
The parameters have been set taking into account the download speeds. But if you have fast broadband speeds, you can increase the number to 10 if you want!
Increases the number of simultaneous downloads in Internet Explorer
There are 3 ways to enable multiple file downloads simultaneously in Internet Explorer:
- Use group policy settings
- Editing the Windows registry
- Using Microsoft Fix It.
Use group policy settings
Open the Group Policy Editor and go to the following settings:
User Settings> Administrative Templates> Windows Components> Internet Explorer> Security Features> AJAX
Now, in the left pane, double-click Maximum number of connections per server (HTTP 1.0)check Ability and change its value to, for example, ten. Click Apply / OK.
This policy setting allows you to change the default connection limit for HTTP 1.0 from 6 connections per host to a limit of your choice (2 to 128). If you disable or do not configure this policy setting, Internet Explorer will use the default connection limit for HTTP 1.0 (6 connections per host). In versions of Internet Explorer prior to Internet Explorer 8, the default connection limit for HTTP 1.0 was 4.
Then double-click Maximum number of connections per server (HTTP 1.1)check Ability and change the value to 10 or whatever.
This policy setting allows you to change the default connection limit for HTTP 1.1 from 6 connections per host to a limit of your choice (2 to 128). If you enable this policy setting, Internet Explorer uses the connection limit you choose for HTTP 1.1. If you disable or do not configure this policy setting, Internet Explorer uses the default connection limit for HTTP 1.1 (6 connections per host). In versions of Internet Explorer prior to Internet Explorer 8, the default connection limit for HTTP 1.1 was 2. Click Apply / OK when done.
If your version of Windows does not have Group Policy Editor, you can edit the Windows registry or use a patch.
Using the Windows registry
Open the Registry Editor and navigate to the next key;
In the right pane, right-click and create a new DWORD with the value name iexplore.exe and Decimal value data, for example, 10.
Then navigate to the following key and re-create a new DWORD with the iexplore.exe value name and decimal value data, for example 10:
Using Fix It
Microsoft has made it easy for you! You can download Fix It 50098 mentioned in KB282402 and follow the wizard to change the settings. This will increase the number of files you can download at one time to 10.
If you use Internet Explorer and want to allow multiple files to be downloaded, you can use the guides mentioned above. It is possible to allow IE to download up to 10 files at a time using the Registry Editor and the Local Group Policy Editor. To do this, open GPEDIT and double-click Maximum number of connections per server (HTTP 1.0) configuration. Then enter 10 in the box and click the OK button.
To change the download settings in Internet Explorer, you need to open internet options first panel. Go to the Security tab and click Custom level button. Find out To download choice and choice Active On Disable option according to your needs. Alternatively, you can also follow the above guidelines to change your download settings.
This allows you to download up to 10 files simultaneously using Internet Explorer to your Windows system.
