Tennis: But what did our 2021 bets yield? – rts.ch

Earlier this year we had compiled a list of 10 bets for the then opening tennis season. Closed this chapter, we take stock of an exercise not much like the others, but always marked by the incredible Novak Djokovic.

In early 2021, 10 tennis bets he had come to fill these pages. We talked about expected successes (a Swiss gold medal at the Olympics), possibly incredible careers (Jannik Sinner at the Masters) or things that seemed obvious to us (a 21st major title for Rafael Nadal). A survey of our readers (read the box) it was also launched. Now let’s see what to remember about these bets …

1) Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic will win a mixed doubles medal at the Tokyo Olympics …

We were expecting this success in mixed doubles from the Swiss couple. That was not the case, because Federer – injured – did not “show up” in Tokyo. But Belinda Bencic, magnificent, partly allowed us to succeed in this bet. Brilliant in Japan, Saint-Galloise not only won the individual title, but also the silver in doubles with Viktorija Golubic.

2) Serena Williams will not win her 24th major title …

Fair! The American’s countertop is stuck in 23 Grand Slam trophies. This year, the American has only been able to fool the Seniors once, earlier this year in Australia (semifinals). Then, defeated in the eighth round at Roland-Garros, injured in her first round at Wimbledon, she ended up skipping the US Open. At 40 (too), the youngest of Venus says she still has a huge motivation, but we clearly feel her at the end of the race. This 24th major, historic, is in great danger of never being his.

3) There will be a new Grand Slam winner …

And there were even 2! Barbora Krejcikova first at Roland Garros, then the amazing Emma Raducanu and then at the US Open. Two very beautiful stories, which gave even more beautiful colors this season. Special mention for the British, so brilliant in Flushing.

4) Novak Djokovic will win at least 2 major titles …

The “bugger” almost made it all the way! Extraordinary, Novak Djokovic “swallowed” the Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon. He spent “only” 3 sets of the immense feat synonymous with “Calendar Grand Slam”. Great man of the year, once again, the Serb – legendary – did it even better than we thought. He is “just” waiting for the 21st.

5) Iga Swiatek will enter the top 5 …

Welcome! The Pole climbed to 4th place in late September. Although she did not win a Grand Slam, unlike in 2020, Iga Swiatek was able to get on the WTA podium.

6) Marc-Andrea Hüsler will appear in the top-100 …

Well no, after a very promising 2020 season finale, finishing in 148th place in the world, Zurich failed to force the door of the top-100. It just climbed 6 places (142nd) in January before falling. He is now in 188th place.

7) Rafael Nadal will bring his total Grand Slam titles to 21 …

Roland-Garros is no longer his Promised Land and we don’t know if it will ever be again. King of Paris for years, Rafael Nadal ceded his crown to Novak Djokovic, his executioner in the semifinals after more than 4 hours of fighting. Lost bet for us, Paris for him.

8) There will be no new male Grand Slam winners …

Error on our part! Daniil Medvedev, like Dominic Thiem a year earlier, flew through the glass ceiling at the US Open. The Russian has almost fared better than the Austrian, as he put an end to the dream of one of the greatest players in history by beating him in the New York final.

9) Jannik Sinner will qualify for the Master …

Welcome! The Italian, who had started in 2020 in the 36th ranking of the ATP, probably did not expect everyone at the end of the Masters year. But he got there! Ranked 10th before the Turin tournament, Sinner entered the final table thanks to the retirement of his friend Matteo Berrettini. He hooked Daniil Medvedev before beating Hubert Hurkacz.

10) Juan Martin Del Potro and Andy Murray will say goodbye …

Error! Often injured, the Argentine still dreams of returning. He even went back to the tracks and it would be great to be able to see him again one day in competition. As for the Scotsman (ATP 134), also admirable, he holds on and deserves immense respect. This season he has signed 2 quarterfinals.
